GENERATION ADIDAS

No Affect on Cap

Beltran Anthony D $ 70,000.00
Nimo Alex M $ 70,000.00
Seitz Chris GK $ 75,000.00

I don’t believe that the current cap amount has been published but it is believed to either be the same as last season ($2.3M) or a slight increase ($2.4M).  Based on salaries of current players alone this would indicate that there is approx $700K in available cap space.  However, we really don’t have all of the facts that impact the cap.

Unknowns:

  • Loan buyout costs for Olave
  • Loan buyout costs for Morales
  • The amount of Raphael Cox’s deal (likely $34K)
  • The amount of Escalada’s agreement (before and after increase)
  • The amount of Wingert’s new deal (I believe the amount above is prior to his extension)
  • Buyout of Deuchar’s contract
  • Allocation money used to offset Morales and Olave buyout

Here is what I do know:

  • Escalada signed to a minimal contract until Apr 15th (probably $40K or so).  If he continues with the team this will increase dramatically.  I am guessing $100K - $150K.
  • If Escalada stays past April 15th, there may need to be a salary reduced or a player cut.  This means that we are close to the $2.3M cap number, or in other words the cumulative affect of the unknowns above must be around $600K - $700K.  WOW!
  • The Grabavoy signing may make a signing of El Khalifi a pipe dream at this point or may require another roster adjustment.

Good Values

  • Will Johnson: at $51K he is likely the best value on the roster.  He just signed with the team, but a great year this year will put a lot of pressure on the team to deal with him from a financial point.
  • Yura Movsisyan: if Yura can follow up this season with performances like those he contributed at the end of 2008, then his $60K will be another great value.  Yura is in the final season of his contract, so a good year could really pay off for him.

Saturday Interview: American Dream (from the Scotsman)

The Scotsman.com has a fabulous article about Kenny Deuchar's American experience. This is a must read in my opinion. In it, Deuchar reveals some interesting aspects of his experience with Real Salt Lake.

He mentions being surprised at the comaradarie that exists with the opponent after matches. He recounts an experience after knocking Colorado out of the playoffs last year, "we met them all in the nightclub afterwards. We had basically just ended their season, but were invited back to one of their player's places for a house party."

He explains that his departure was the teams decision, "You are signed to the league (Major League Soccer] rather than the club and I had another year left on my contract. But I was keen to come back, and they were keen to free up some space on their salary caps. There were no hard feelings."

He discusses the atmosphere differences in the States,"Over there you might get 15-16,000 at games, but it is quiet. You are maybe playing in stadiums which hold over 50,000, but only 20,000 are at games. Even with 6-7,000 here, there is more of a buzz. I prefer it."

The article also mentions that Deuchar's new bride is expecting. Congrats Kenny and Silvy!

Friday Real Salt Lake Updates

I was able to sit down with Bill Manning today and can pass along a few updates:

All-Star Game:

One thing I did not realize is that the All-Star Game opponent is actually chosen and negotiated with by the team hosting the event. I assumed that the league was the one driving this, but it's Bill Manning and team.

There are actually still two teams in the mix for this. One team was close to being contracted, but there have been issues regarding TV rights. If these cannot be worked out, then there is a second option. Both teams are top tier European teams, but neither are one of the "Top 5", simply because those teams are too expensive.

Real Madrid Relationship:

This is currently in limbo because of the resignation earlier this year of Real Madrid's President Ramon Caulderon. Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checkett's had a very good relationship with Caulderon, and his departure was likely an initial blow to the team. However, Checkett's also has a relationship with various board members of Real Madrid, and as soon as a successor is in place discussions about the relationship will likely resume.

Ogden Outlaws Relationship:

Real Salt Lake will have a close working partnership with the Ogden Outlaws this season and beyond. RSL Coach Jeff Cassar will be involved with scouting and mentoring players during the season. The team will provide some sponsorship to the PDL club, and also helped the Outlaws land former Dallas Burn player Ted Eck as their Head Coach. Also look for young RSL prospects such as James Rogers to potentially play with the team as a way to further enhance their soccer training in an effort to get them ready to take the step up to Major League Soccer. Update: Here is the press release on the Outlaws/RSL relationship. And another one on the hiring of Ted Eck.

Austin Aztex:

As was widely speculated, the rumored USL-1 opponent for the March 21st exhibition match will be the Austin Aztecs. Contract was recently finalized and this has been confirmed.

Season Tickets:

Season ticket sales died during the Dec/Jan period after a strong renewal surrounding the stadium opener. However, new sales have picked up in recent weeks. The team is expecting to be at 7,000 season tickets sold (outside of corporate sales). Comparing to previous years is a bit difficult as they previously counted corporate/sponsorship tickets in the season ticket count. Now especially with the suites it's important to break these out. Either way this represents a healthy increase over 2008. The team also is projected to be 3rd in the league for ticket revenue (behind Seattle and Toronto presumably).

Charleston Tournament:

This upcoming Charleston Tournament is crucial for Luis Escalada who has reportedly lost 10 pounds and has improved his fitness. He is a back to the goal player who stays primarily in front of the goal. He can knock the ball down and distribute. If he can get into proper form and fitness the team feels that he would potentially be a good complement to either Yura Movsisyan or Robbie Findley on the pitch. This upcoming tournament will be a key to see where he is at.

The tournament is also important for Clint Mathis who showed last season that he has the ability and will put in the effort. He was shut out from scoring last season, but that doesn't necessarily deter the RSL staff from relying on him. However, this Charleston Tournament may bring to light how Mathis may fit in during the upcoming year.

I was also able to get some insight from Manning on the current economic environment and the impact on RSL, and the rest of the league. I will share those thoughts in the near future.

Valencia to Appear in MLS All-Star Contest

Word out of Spain confirms the speculation by Steve Goff that Valencia will be the All-Star opponent.

VALENCIA / D. RODRÍGUEZ The Major League Soccer, which is how it is called, plans to formally announce within days that Valencia will be the guest of the event except for this year. The target date is next July 29. The venue, the newly opened Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Read about it here in Spanish (or Google translated version).

With the dire financial situation for Valencia this could be an interesting situation to keep an eye on over the next few months. It will also be interesting to see if the La Liga club is forced to sell off high profile players between now and then.

What are your thoughts about this announcement?

Rachid El Khalifi's Status at Cambuur

It seems that Cambuur has shifted their focus in the last couple of weeks away from Rachid El Khalifi being a starter. El Khalifi had been a regular starter, and has not been selected to start for this weekends action. I'm not sure if this is a sign that they think he'll be departing soon, or if they like Maachi's ability instead.

With Garth Lagerway's comments that El Khalifi was the most talented trialist that they brought in during this offseason but that he's "quite a bit more expensive" than the other guys could this recent development play into RSL's hands? We heard that El Khalifi had rejected RSL's initial offer and was waiting for a follow-up offer. Is it in RSL's best interest to wait it out? Does El Khalifi's bargaining power go down as he sits on the bench?

As Lagerway indicated - until we see signs that this current RSL group, composed mostly of holdovers from last season, is not cutting it - then there is no hurry to rush him in to the team. (Although it can be difficult to integrate a player with a different style during the season).

I have no idea where negotiations stand, but it will be interesting to see this one play out.

Tallying Up RSL's Offseason Moves

With today's acquisition of Ned Grabovoy and the signings of Raphael Cox and Luis Escalada, I thought I'd tally up the player movement for RSL this offseason. Here it is, let me know if I missed anything:

Incoming:

  1. Luis Escalada (est. $60K - $90K)
  2. Ned Grabavoy ($90K)
  3. Jean Alexandre (est. $40K)
  4. Raphael Cox (est. $30K)

Outgoing:

  1. Dema Kovalenko ($200K)
  2. Kenny Deuchar ($135K)
  3. Fabian Espindola ($75K)
  4. Nate Sturgis ($75K)
  5. Nik Besagno (Gen Ad)
  6. Brennan Tennelle ($13K)
  7. Kevin Reiman ($13K)
  8. Kenny Cutler ($36K)
  9. Dustin Kirby ($18K)

I think it's safe to say these moves reflect the reduction in roster spots (4 less spots), and the tightening salary cap caused by the Morales/Olave buyouts and the extension (and presumable raise for Chris Wingert).

Additional Camp Notes

A couple of items I forgot to mention:

RSL tried to trade for Grabavoy recently, but were excited that they were able to pick him up free through waivers instead. Part of Grabavoy's appeal is his versatility. With the limited roster spots, it's important to have versatility to get the most out of your roster.

No word on the 3rd keeper spot. Right now if we kept all 4 keepers we'd have a completely full roster. Obviously this won't happen. I'm still guessing we'll keep Steve Clark in a developmental roster spot which would leave an open senior roster spot (for El Khalifi?). In addition, Clark was practicing today with Rimando and Seitz. Kyle Reynish was on the sideline working with Nunez who is rehabbing his knee. Not sure of the reason for this, but it does add to the speculation that Clark will win the spot.

Camp Updates

Quick camp updates:

Midfielder Ned Grabovoy acquired through waiver draft.

Look for Raphael Cox to be signed to a senior roster spot.

Luis Escalada signed to a low $$$ contract. There is an April 15th decision date to either release the player or increase the value of the contract.

El Khalifi was the best trialist in camp. El Khalifi not a dead issue, but he is "more expensive" than other options and "he's not here right now."

There will be another trialist in Charleston.

Garth in South America and Jason has been in Costa Rica looking at backup options. Depending on the results of the time in Charleston, we could call on these backup options.

Roster Tidbits

Midfielder Brennan Tennelle waived.

Waiver draft originally scheduled for yesterday to be held this afternoon due to storms back East.

Charleston roster expected later today.

EDIT: By my count this leaves us with 4 open spots. I assume that Alexandre is occupying a senior roster spot, and so we would have 1 dev spot, and 3 sr spots. Salary cap is much more difficult to estimate due to Olave/Morales buyouts and contract extensions and the Wingert contract extension.

Wingert Given Contract Extension

Real Salt Lake announced today a contract extension for defender Chris Wingert who was reported to have been unhappy with his current agreement. The extension is through the 2012 season and adds continuity to the core that the team has been trying to build.

The amount of the contract was not announced as expected, however I would guess that this would take him to right around the $100K mark. His experience with the US National Team earlier this year undoubtedly helped his bargaining power.

Getting to the Core of It

There has been alot of talk about keeping "the core" intact during this offseason. In the abstract, this is a very agreeable idea. It's no secret that many professional franchises have success just by building a strong history, continuity and tradition. Out of this often times comes a belief in oneself, and a corresponding doubt deep in the mind of the opponent.

Sometimes this "core" comes from a common coaching staff, group of players or it can even come from the management team and overall philosophy. We have an example of this in our community with the Utah Jazz under the long tenure of Jerry Sloan. Last season Jason Kreis pointed to the Houston and New England franchises as the shining stars of the MLS in this regard (although New England ended up having a down year).

Garth Lagerway has frequently pointed to this "core" as a reason to have confidence in this version of RSL despite the lack of an offseason splash of acquisitions. In the video clip posted yesterday he also reminds us that because of this core we are far ahead of where we were as a team at this time last season.

So who is this core? I'm sure everyone will have a differing opinion on this, but here are my thoughts:

Yura Movsisyan: He's young, has been eratic, and at times plays with the ball too much. So why is he in my core? He proved to be a crucial part of the team's attack down the stretch last season. He had 7 goals and an assist in the final 11 games that Real Salt Lake played last season. While this may have been partially just a hot streak, I believe that it was representative of what he can do. He will be greatly needed in what otherwise could turn out to be an anemic offense.

Javier Morales: The motor behind it all. Likely the teams greatest player. If you want to know how valuable he is, watch the final match against Colorado from last season and see how dreadful the team looked when Pablo Mastroeni managed to bottle him up. 'Nuf said.

Will Johnson: an up and coming young player that Lagerway has tagged as "a future all-star". His value to the team comes partially in the fact that he works so well with Morales.

Kyle Beckerman: When Beckerman shows that intensity that he often does, he can change the tone of a game. This disappeared at times last season and the team suffered. I'm no longer convinced that he's at the top of the talent chart for the team, but his hustle, attitude and leadership are invaluable to the team. And it's the reason he is called "captain" for RSL.

Nat Borchers: Anyone who stands behind Nick Rimando in the RSL defensive end, understands the value that Borchers provides as an organizer. This is likely part of the reason that he was named Defensive Player of the Year for the team. He is rarely caught out of position.

Jamison Olave: There are actually reasons to leave him off this list (I know, not a popular comment to make among RSL fans). His judgement was poor at times last season. He took unnecessary risks including one that cost the team in the Western Conference Finals, and I feared him giving up a PK during many points last season (luckily this never happened). However, his raw ability just makes up for all of that. I think another year with the team will do him wonders, and his tandem with Borchers helps solidifies one of the stronger central defenses in the league.

Chris Wingert: Again, as a pure outside defender I'm not sure of his qualifications among the league's elite. He sometimes struggles with individual marking, can get beaten by speedy wing play and can get caught up-field at times. However, his wing-back role on this team is invaluable. He makes well-timed overlap runs, gets off great crosses, and his versatility is a huge asset. He is also coming off of a fantastic season. He's also a leader for this team.

Nick Rimando: I thought he had a phenomenal 2007 season, and an above average 2008. I'm not sure he'd make a consensus opinion for a top 10 keeper in the league. He can get beaten - especially up high. He should also be held responsible for a couple of high-profile mis-communications with defenders last season. However, he is the glue that helps hold the defense together. He's a clear-headed veteran, who organizes his defense well and rarely is caught out of position. He makes 'em beat him.

Jason Kreis: Although still relatively new to the coaching profession, there is no mistaking his ability to pull the team together last season. His three mantra's from last season: 1) No undue pressure on ourselves; 2) the team is the star; and 3) Fortune favors the bold hit just the spot for this young crew. Quite simply - he had this team focused last season and at the end of the season they clearly believed in themselves. If he can keep this team belief momentum rolling, we'll likely be in for a good season.

Notable exceptions: Andy Williams - this one was tough. In many ways he's the embodiment of this franchise. At this point in his career, I just think he won't play enough to be considered "core". Clearly a valuable piece of the puzzle. Robbie Findley - see Andy Williams. Also, we haven't seen the consistent scoring ability that we need from him. Ian Joy - a nice leader. His game picked up at the end of last season. He began to pick his spots to push forward more. Needs to prove a little more to me before he can be classified as core.

So how does this "core" stack up? I'd say that it's right there with the best in the league. The question in my mind is - does the team have the depth, and complimentary players it needs to improve on last seasons 10-10-10 record? What say you?

Valencia - MLS All-Star Game Opponent?

Steve Goff, the Soccer Insider, is reporting that Valencia is the leading candidate for the All-Star Game opponent on July 29th at Rio Tinto Stadium. He also indicates that a decision is expected next week.

Not quite the top-notch opponent that had talked about in Milan, Inter, Real Madrid, etc. The team is still a quality side and features star striker, David Villa. They currently sit tied for 5th in La Liga.

The team also raised eyebrows in recent weeks for failing to pay their players. This move is likely done in order to help raise some cash to help the team meet their financial obligations.
