Highlights of RSL/Fusion Match

Here is a highlight compilation of last nights RSL/Ventura County Fusion match. Enjoy:

FYI. Roster #'s of some of the newcomers:

Escalada #22

Jorginho Paulista #16

Kennedy Owusah-Ansah #31

Alex Viveros #38

Rachid El Khalifi #32
(update - he's #34 on the clip)

Raphael Cox #23

David Hertel #15

To me I think Nimo made some good moves, and what looked like a couple of decent crosses. In addition, I think it was El Khalifi who appeared to make some nifty moves including a nice 360 with the ball.

RSL -vs- VCF Match Report

The Ventura County Star seems to confirm Keepin' It Real's eyewitness account. Sounds like if anything the Fusion got the best of play in the match:

After a slow first 45 minutes, the Fusion applied much of the offensive pressure in the second half. Newcomer Ivan Trejo forced the issue up front and laced multiple shots just wide of Real Salt Lake’s near post.

Updates on Fusion/RSL match ***UPDATED***

Here is a quick first half update from someone at the match:

First half was pretty equal. Luis miguel is out of shape! Jorginho looked ok. Kennedy was outside right. He looked good. He came in from hertha and is a Canadian international. Everyone still trying to get there touch back. Whole new squad for second half.

I hope to get some more feedback after the game.

EDIT: Luis Escalada/Luis Tejada? Maybe it's the name.

UPDATE: Second Half Lineup (from Behind the Shield)
GK - Kyle Reynish; DF - David Hertel, Jamison Olave, Ian Joy, Raphael Cox; MF - Will Johnson, Jean Alexandre, Alexander Viveros, Rachid El-Khalifi; FW - Robbie Findley, Tino Nunez

UPDATE #2:
Yes game is over and ended in a 0-0 draw. JK was pissed off to say the least! RSL also pulled the plug on our local internet feed. They looked terrible! I couldn't name too many who looked even half way decent. The two who stuck out for RSL was Will Johnson and Robbie Findley. They played the second half (spilt squads). Olave looked like crap and made several mistakes in the back that Fusion should have capitalized on. Only Will's shot in the seconds was the closest shot on goal that our Goalie (who got waved from Galaxy) made a nice save! A lot of messy play from RSL, wasn't pretty to watch?

As far as Moyses, he played second half and is still hurt. Only lasted about 25 mins. On one of Olave's mistakes he almost capitalized but hit the post and they called him offside. He has a long way to go but shows potential. Most likely he will play PDL with us.

Movsisyan's Brother on Trial with Fusion

Movsisyan's Brother, Moyses, on Trial with Fusion

Ventura County Star...

The match enables the Fusion to welcome back its first international, Jean Alexandre, who left the club last summer after his call-up to the Haitian national team.

Alexandre was drafted 12th overall in the recent MLS Superdraft by Real Salt Lake.

“It’s exciting,” said Smith. “He’s really high on (Salt Lake coach) Jason Kreis’ list of players that are going to become good.”

Alexandre, who played up front in college, is being used as an offensive midfield player by Real.

“He’s an extremely strong player,” said Smith. “He’s got a lethal shot on him.”

Last year, the Fusion was able to witness the finishing talents of Salt Lake striker Yura Movsisyan, who scored four times in a 6-0 Salt Lake drubbing of a skeletal Fusion side.

This year, the Fusion has Movsisyan’s younger brother, Moyses, on trial, making the match a family affair.

“We’re going to give him a chance,” said Smith.

Match Sidenote: Weather may play a factor in todays match. It is unusually cold for Southern California (low 50's, which is a good temperature for soccer), but rains are expected to roll in around the second half of the match.

RSL Selects...

Jean Alexandre, M, Lynn University

(pics courtesy of Lynn Univ website)

Of course, we should have known. This was no surprise, right?

  • Preliminary info is that even though he is a Haitian international player, that he is also a greencard holder. Trying to verify.
    • If you remember, Lynn University was the Florida team that surprised RSL beating them 2-1 during last preseason. I can't find a Lynn boxscore from that game, but I assume that Alexandre was on that roster, and that is where he first came onto the radar.
    • He is also a member of the Ventura County Fusion but did not play in the preseason scrimmage against RSL last preseason.
    • Word is that he projects at D-mid, even though he had a prolific goal scoring season last year (23 goals in 19 games.
Here is some preliminary info (check back for updates).

    NCAA website...

    Nov. 6, 2008
Orlando, Fla. – Lynn University’s men’s soccer team collected more hardware after winning the 2008 Sunshine State Conference regular season title. Eight Fighting Knights earned All-SSC recognition while Jean Alexandre was named the Player and Offensive Player of the Year.

This marks the second consecutive year Lynn has garnered eight selections and fifth time overall. Since joining the conference in 1998, LU has 78 All-SSC accolades, an average of seven per year. In addition, the Blue and White earned four more honors than the next school.

Making the transition from midfield to forward, Alexandre proved to be the conference's most explosive scorer and led the SSC in essentially every offensive statistical category. The native of Delray Beach, Fla., surpassed his three-year totals of 11 goals and 31 points by leading the league with 44 points, 19 goals and 1.27 goals per game. He was also tied for first with five game-winning goals. Alexandre becomes the third Knight in program history to garner Player of the Year honors, second to be named Offensive Player of the year and first to capture both accolades in the same season.

    Salt Lake Tribune...

Real Salt Lake used the 12th pick of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft today on Jean Alexandre, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound Haitian midfielder from Lynn University in Florida whom general manager Garth Lagerwey has described as a "miniature Olave," in reference to bullish defender Jamison Olave.

Alexandre caught the team's attention when he scored against it during the preseason last year, then scored 23 goals as a striker for Lynn during his final collegiate season. Lagerwey regarded Alexandre as the best athlete at the pre-draft scouting combine and said he can play anywhere on the field.

The expansion Seattle Sounders used the No. 1 pick on striker Steve Zakuani of Akron University.

The night before the draft, RSL traded veteran midfielder Dema Kovalenko to the Los Angeles Galaxy for allocation money and a 2011 draft pick whose position depends on how much Kovalenko plays for the Galaxy.

The fiery 31-year-old midfielder from Ukraine was a mainstay in the lineup for much of last season for RSL, starting 19 games and appearing in 22 while battling injuries during the second half of the season. He scored one goal and had two assists in the regular season -- then scored a crucial equalizer in RSL's draw at Chivas USA that pushed them through to the MLS Western Conference final.
