RSL’s Newest Supporters Group: La Barra Real

LaBarraReal

They are the new kids on the block, but you wouldn’t know it. La Barra Real is only a few months old, but they have already established themselves as the largest and loudest supporters group at Rio Tinto Stadium.

At the last home mJavi and Barra 6atch against Colorado, you could see La Barra Real in Section 8. If you looked closely you might have seen the RSL colored “lienzos” adorning the entire section, amid the smoke from the smoke machine and the jumping, chanting supporters and drummers. You were also likely to see numerous flags, and RSL gear, and you might have even seen RSL’s Javier Morales in the middle of the group. If you didn’t see them, there was no doubt that you heard them as they were easy to catch from anywhere in the stadium. They were also featured prominently on Fox Soccer Channel both before the game and at halftime.

Humble Beginnings

The hispanic supporters group was formed at the urging of Real Salt Lake’s front office. JC Perea, Hispanic Sales & Marketing Manager, helped lead this initiative beginning in the offseason along with colleague Juan Maldonado.

“Over December and January we called just a large amount of our Hispanic fans out to a meeting. It was a very successful event. We had over 180 people there,” said Perea.

Luis Castro responded to this call to action. He attended the original meeting along with about 180 other hispanic RSL supporters. When they had the second meeting the numbers had dwindled, and Castro took the initiative to help organize the group.

“We had a second meeting and not many people showed up, and we couldn’t organize anything. Sometimes for Hispanics we’re a little harder to organize. I just asked for the phone numbers to call everyone, and I started calling people and getting them together.“

For his efforts Castro was elected President of the group.

La Barra as a Marketing Tool

There were a number of reasons for the front office to covet a hispanic supporters group like La Barra. First, there is the obvious atmosphere that it creates which can make the game more enjoyable for all explained Perea,

“We just know that there is a particular way that our market (Hispanic) likes to enjoy their games and celebrate the sport. I think it’s evident – the different dynamic that they have brought to the stadium, and the different flavor that they have given Rio Tinto Stadium.”

In addition, it’s part of a larger initiative to pull in the local hispanic fanbase and introduce them to the MLS brand of soccer,

“We definitely aren’t satisfied with where we are. I don’t think we’ll be able to win over on a full-time basis the first generation fans. It’s those second generation fans that we are going after - those kids born in the States that due to parental influences have a team in Mexico. We really have got to reach out to them and show them that the misconception that MLS is a lower-level league is really a misconception.”

Finally, the team realizes that there are a few Mexican fans that attend certain matches like the Chicago Fire, Chivas USA and the upcoming America match.

“With the Barra, now when people come out to those 1 or 2 matches a year when Chicago and Chivas USA come, they can see that there is someone just like them that has taken that RSL shield to heart.”

Perea also mentions that RSL didn’t do a great job of reaching out to the hispanic fan base in the past. First, he doesn’t feel like they created a great atmosphere for this group to latch onto at Rice Eccles. Second, they didn’t do a good job of mining their database to help connect this group together. And finally they didn’t put a good product on the field during the first few years.

However, with the arrival of Bill Manning Perea feels that things have changed. The RSL President created a special group specifically dedicated to reaching out to the hispanic market, and he has had a different view towards spending dollars to help try to attract this demographic.

“He’s seeing it not as an expense, but a long-term plan. Now we have a real Hispanic department. It’s still largely grass roots, but we’re on the right track.”

The Birth of a Name

Surprisingly the “La Barra” part was the easy one, and came first.

They considered other options before settling on La Barra, but they were stuck with how to complete it. Then a co-worker of Castro’s suggested that it absolutely had to be something connected to Real Salt Lake, and someone mentioned simply “La Barra Real”. It stuck from that moment on.

La Barra Members

The members of La Barra Real have quite differing backgrounds. While the largest demographic is probably young (20’s to early 30’s) and of Mexican descent, there is quite a broad spectrum with participants whose origin is from Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala, and even Spain.

The oldest participant (sixty-ish) is an RSL fan from Spain who grew up near Real Madrid’sJesus and Joshua Martinez(2) stadium and used to attend matches there when he was a little kid. He enjoys participating in La Barra Real because it reminds him of his youth. The youngest participant is Joshua Martinez who just turned 3 and has his own seat and drum!

Luis Castro himself is a 24 year-old originally from Mexico City. He was a fan of Necaxa and had some strong family ties to the club as he was related to one of the players.

He is not unlike many of the members who are either first generation Americans whose family immigrated here to the US during their lifetime, or are 2nd generation Americans and have ties to the local soccer club from their place of origin that has been passed through their parents. And Castro estimates that about 75% of their members have experienced soccer at stadiums outside of the US.

While they are not requiring memberships during this first year, Castro says,

“Officially we have 45 Barra members who have season tickets, but we have a lot of guys that come game-by-game.”

Game Day Routine

The game day routine for La Barra Real actually begins the day before the game.

“Our day begins the day before the game. We get together and practice our chants and practice our drums. We practice a couple of hours for the next day.”

On game day, they get an early start on things,

“Three hours before the game two of our guys get our section ready, so that it looks good for the game. We meet two hours before the game for tailgating. A half hour before the game we march and sing our way to our section. We march around the stadium once and then go to our section. As soon as we get to our seats we start singing and don’t stop until the game is over except for at halftime. We’ll stay after the game for 15 minutes singing until they kick us out, and then we go through the tunnel and sing all the way through the parking lot.”

They do have a special song that they sing to get things started,

“We always start with one song for about 15 minutes. Our official song. Our good luck song.”

They also have developed a habit for picking out certain opposing players to harass,

“Mostly we focus on the Hispanic players because we can yell at them and they understand. When Kansas City came we yelled at Piojo Lopez. At the end of the game, he came over and laughed at us.”

Expectations

The expectations are easy for those who participate in La Barra Real.

“The only thing we ask is that you enjoy the game, and sing, and jump with us. You don’t have to speak Spanish. Just have fun. We welcome anyone,” Castro told Keepin’ It Real.

In addition, you can’t wear the jersey of an opposing team or cheer for them when you’re in their section.

“We already had a talk about that. For the America game – 50% of La Barra members are America fans.” Luis laid down the law, and said he’d love to have them, “in our section but if you are going to cheer for America you’ll have to sit in another section.”

Goals for the Group

The goals of La Barra are quite ambitious.

“Our goal is to be the best supporters group of the whole MLS. We want to make Rio Tinto to be a scary place to play for the other team.”

Castro explained that he remembers the home playoff game against Chivas last season. He remembers hearing how loud the visiting supporters were and felt that they outdid our own supporters groups, and he was frustrated. So he, and the rest of La Barra, are determined not to let that happen at home again.

Castro also mentions that he has received some comments from DC’s La Barra Brava complaining that they copied them by their choice of name. Castro’s response was simply that La Barra Real was going to become the best supporters group in the league, and that “La Barra” is a generic term used throughout Spanish-speaking countries.

If La Barra Real can emulate La Barra Brava, then they are in good company, as they have long been considered the gold standard for supporters groups in MLS.

You can find more info, pictures and video of La Barra Real on Myspace.

RSL -vs- DC United: Breaking it Down

As we take a look at the upcoming match, I thought I'd break it down by position on the field. In order to do so, let's look at the projected starters:

Real Salt Lake:
(4-4-2)

GK: Rimando;
DEF: Beltran, Borchers, Olave, Wingert;
MID: Beckerman, Morales, Johnson, Mathis;
FWD: Movsisyan, Findley

DC United:
(3-5-2)

GK: Crayton;
DEF: Namoff, Jakovic, Burch;
MID: Fred, Simms, Gomez, Olsen, Wallace;
FWD: Pontius, Emilio

Position breakdown:

Goalkeeping: this is a no brainer. None of DC's keepers are even "average". So this year it really doesn't matter which one they trot out there, they will give up goals. Rimando won't be confused for keeper of the year, but he's fairly solid. ADVANTAGE: RSL

Defenders: I'm projecting the 3-man backline because they used it last week, and Soehn seems to like that formation. However, he was criticized for employing it last year after the 4-0 debacle they experienced at Rice Eccles. It also suits C. Gomez well, and emphasizes the possession style. Having said that, DC's defense may prove to be a liability. I'm not impressed with Jakovic to this point. RSL on the other hand has a strong backline. ADVANTAGE: RSL

Midfielders: Probably a strength for DC, but RSL's midfield is no slouch either. RSL's midfield features a tireless engine in Will Johnson and a creative playmaker in Javi Morales, with Beckerman and Mathis proving to be solid as well. DC is glad to have the services of Christian Gomez and Ben Olsen back. Fred and Simms are also good complimentary players. Quaranta and McTavish could also play into the mix after being injured. The numbers with a 5th midfielder probably puts them over the top. ADVANTAGE: DC UNITED

Forwards: Emilio was on fire in 2007. With 2 goals in 3 games, is this a sign that he's back? Pontius seems to be faring well as a rookie, but they'll miss the suspended Moreno. On the RSL side, Findley is coming off of a hat trick, and Movsisyan proved to be a goal scoring threat a season ago, but hasn't managed to find one yet this season. ADVANTAGE: RSL

Intangibles: Coaching, home field, style of play, momentum, depth. My leaning is slightly RSL's way when playing at home, but it's too close to call. ADVANTAGE: DRAW

So in my mind this match should go RSL's way. Of course, it doesn't always go as played. My bet: 2-1 RSL.

Clarification: a couple people have asked me about my picks on midfielders and forwards: the DC advantage for midfielders is because of the formation. The RSL advantage at forward is due to the absence of Moreno. I may have gone the opposite direction on both of these without those factors.

Schedule this week

Tuesday: Today's scrimmage against local amateur club Olympique Montreux has been closed to public and media. No information from the team on the reason for this. Speculation could lead you to believe that the team is working on some new wrinkles, or maybe with the approaching transfer deadline (Apr 15th) there is a trialist in the mix. Or maybe they just want to avoid the distractions. Who knows?

Wednesday: off day

Thursday: Training at Rio Tinto Stadium (10 am)

Friday: Training at Xango Field (11 am)

Casey beats out Findley for POTW

Colorado's Connor Casey beat out RSL's Robbie Findley for Player of the Week honors after both players managed a hat-trick during last weeks play. Casey's hat-trick came courtesy of the porous LA Galaxy defense and included a goal just 16 seconds into the match (surprisingly that's the second fastest goal in MLS history).

Findley's hat-trick came against a Crew defense missing one of their best defensive players (Hejduk) and included a gift courtesy of Crew keeper Will Hesmer. The unique thing about Findley's hat-trick was that it included a goal with each foot and a header. Unique, but not all that exciting.

So did Findley get snubbed? Maybe. To be honest, I think you could toss a coin. Both players were dangerous and had numerous chances in the match, but each had goals that were fairly soft. The one thing that may have given Casey the edge is that his match was much closer (3-2) and so there was a sense that his 3rd goal was more meaningful than Findley's, since RSL beat the Crew 4-1. I'm just glad that the honor didn't go to a Sounders player as I thought Keller's award last week was pretty weak.

What are your thoughts?

Historic Hat-Trick

Robbie Findley Nets Three in Victory Over Champs

DSC_0102

Real Salt Lake enjoyed a magical night tonight with a 4-1 win against the Columbus Crew. The Man of the Match was clearly Robbie Findley who recorded his first professional hat-trick, and Real Salt Lake's first league hat-trick (althought coach Jason Kreis did have a hat-trick in an Open Cup match).

Robbie Findley seemed extremely excited over the 3-goal output that he was able to manage. In 2 of the last 4 matches that I have witnessed Robbie play in he has dominated the action - tonight and then against Charleston a couple of weeks back. Let's hope this activity and quality of play continues.

Several other players had good matches:

Movsisyan: good work on the pitch tonight but he failed to finish one of his several chances. He also supplied some good balls to his teammates, including an assist to Findley on a goal, already equaling his assist count from last season.

Mathis: as Kreis mentioned, Mathis has been good on the ball in both matches. He had 2 assists in this match, and he is very underrated in his ability to pressure the ball and cause opponents to give up possession.

Johnson: That first blast at the goal which resulted in a rebound and eventually the opening goal at the 2nd minute mark was amazing. It was 25 yards out, but Will told me that he likes to take those kind of free kicks and he talked Javi off the ball just prior to the kick. Look for more of this from distance in the future.

Beltran: Okay so it wasn't stellar, but this position was my biggest concern coming into the match, especially when I saw Rogers in the Starting XI for the Crew. I thought Beltran had a decent outing and did reasonably well against Schelotto. Not spectacular but headed in the right direction.

Borchers: Phenomenal match. He helped avert so many "almosts" on the part of the Crew that I lost count.

The crowd was a mixture of disappointment and admiration.

Disappointment - because of their sparse numbers. 11,806 was the announced crowd which is based on paid tickets, but the real number in attendance was likely several thousand less than that. While there were several reasons for this low attendance, you would hope that the support for the club would be strong enough to drive people into the seats even under adverse circumstances.

Admiration - because there were alot of reasons to stay home, but a solid core chose to attend anyway. And the crowd was surprisingly vocal despite their small numbers (of course it's easier to be vocal when your club leads start-to-finish). In addition, this crew largely remained even after a heavy rain began to come down during the last 10 minutes of the match when the team enjoyed a 3-goal lead.

Keep in mind that the Crew did have a depleted lineup and were facing a situation of looking ahead to the Chivas game on Sunday as well. We should avoid getting ahead of ourselves as to what this means for future weeks, but if nothing else I think Kreis was likely right when he said how "important it was for us to score early on, and especially to have Findley score the goal." This should boost his confidence dramatically.

What are your thoughts on tonight's match?

Home Opener – Attendance Figures

UPDATED to include Thursday’s attendance at 11,806. Very poor showing, but great match. Also added 2008 opener numbers for every team, and added the rest of the opener numbers.

Major League Soccer teams typically get a big boost to their season’s attendance figures from their home opener (and when Beckham and Blanco come to town). Real Salt Lake has had some decent opener figures in the past, but weather always comes into play.

Aside from the weather (which is looking dicey this year), there are four other key factors that may affect attendance this year:

  • High expectations coming off of the team’s first ever playoff run
  • Rio Tinto Stadium which should draw people in better than Rice Eccles did
  • Midweek game – I don’t know the numbers but these games always draw substantially less than the weekend variety
  • Nationally televised ESPN2 game. Combined with the weather this gives interested parties another option to get their RSL fix

So where does this leave attendance expectations for tonight’s match? I have no clue, but I think the prevailing thinking is that attendance will be down primarily do to the weather. This, despite Jason Kreis’ appeal to the fans and the team’s “Ticket Insurance” for this match.

Can the team exceed their previous opener low of 16,132?

We’re Ready to Rumble: Bring on the Sounders

RSLshield

main_logo

Real Salt Lake –vs – Seattle Sounders FC

Saturday March 28, 2009: 8:30 PM

KUTV 2, KALL 700

Qwest Field, Seattle, Washington

Well, it’s finally upon us – tomorrow’s First Kick for RSL against the un-expansion-like Seattle Sounders. As you know Seattle had an impressive MLS debut last week against the expansion-like New York Red Bulls. The Emerald City darlings were led by young Colombian sensation Fredy Montero, who notched two goals and an assist in front of the raucous crowd of 32,000-plus at Qwest Field in Seattle. As a result, Montero ended up bringing home awards for both MLS Player of the Week and Goal of the Week.

However, while all eyes were on Montero, midfielders Brad Evans and Osvaldo Alonso played keyed roles helping to dominate possession of the ball in the opener. Forward Nate Jaqua also played quite well in the match, and looked very nimble working out on the edge of the box, combining with the rest of the attacking players.

Keys for Real Salt Lake

When asked what the key would be for RSL defensively to slow down the strong Sounder attack, RSL midfielder Javier Morales said essentially “the key is for us to keep the ball.” When asked a similar question, RSL defender Nat Borchers basically agreed – to paraphrase, “we’re best defensively when the ball doesn’t get past the midfield.” This is an area that RSL could present a much more significant challenge than the NYRB’s were able to last week. Morales will be a key in this role.

Although NYRB forward, Juan Pablo Angel, had a few chances in the match, Seattle’s defense was never really tested and didn’t face any consistent pressure as the Red Bulls only managed 8 shots. Real Salt Lake, on the other hand, averaged over 14 shots per game last season.

In addition to RSL’s midfield being a key, and RSL putting up more shots than the Red Bulls did to challenge Seattle, Real Salt Lake has the capability of quick counter-attacks with the speedy Yura Movsisyan and the speedier Robbie Findley. Look for quick distribution out of the back to be a focus when Seattle presses forward with four or five guys in the box.

Keys for Seattle

Seattle will need to feed off of the energy of the exuberant home crowd once again. Getting an early goal last week was a huge feet for the expansion team. They will need to try to repeat that performance this week.

Since Seattle saw little resistance in the midfield last week and were able to easily transition into the attack, they may be forced to show that they can create a strong buildup on a consistent basis during this match. At the same time, they will need to slow down the RSL midfield, and keep them from comfortably moving into the attack on their side.

How does Ljungberg fit in? As an attacking player he will likely get into the mix with Jacqua and Montero and put pressure on RSL to defend. In the process, Seattle needs to make sure that they don’t get overextended and commit to getting back defensively in the midfield. The forwards will also need to pressure the RSL defenders when they have the ball to try to create turnovers and disrupt RSL’s flow of play.

With the young right back, Tony Beltran, filling in for injured Ian Joy, Seattle may look to exploit RSL on their left flank. Jacqua and Evans occupied this side of the field in the offense for Seattle last week. However, it was the right side and Montero, that was the source of much of the creativity for the team last week. If RSL defender Chris Wingert bombs forward frequently as he is accustomed, he and his teammates will need to show some quick recovery in order to avoid being exploited by the Seattle attack.

Prediction

2-2 draw. I think Seattle is a decent team, but I think RSL may be able to expose some chinks in the armor that weren’t seen a week ago. I think RSL is a better team at this point but the environment will favor Seattle especially early in the match. In addition, if RSL has a potential key weakness it’s scoring goals consistently.

Preseason Thoughts From Jason Kreis: Tactics and Newcomers

I was able to catch up with Coach Kreis and get some of his thoughts during the final stages of preseason. Here are his thoughts on the newcomers to the team, and some discussions related to the style of play that this team employs:

On Luis Escalada: Has a proven record of scoring goals in South America. He is your prototypical goal scorer. He’s a poacher. When he’s around things and get’s opportunities, he finishes them. He needs to continue to work on his fitness. He needs to continue to work on keeping possession for our team. I think those things have clearly been laid out to him, and he’s a guy who’s been working very hard on both of those fronts. It’s always a transition when you bring a foreign player over. It’s always a transition on how we train, what’s going to be expected of them, what the coaching philosophy is, how we play and the style of play. Everything’s different. I think he’s handling it well and he’s working very hard. We’ve seen progress. His weight’s going down. I think he’s a guy that’s getting fitter, and I think he’s a guy that’s transitioning into the way that we want to train and the way that we want to play. By all accounts he seems to want it real badly. So that’s a critical first step.

On Raphael Cox: He’s a left-footed midfielder. He’s a left-footed two-way guy that can play both inside and out. Who is comfortable on the ball. He likes to run at players. He serves a good ball. He, for me, has been a very nice addition this year. One that we weren’t a 100% sure would be with us at this stage, but he’s earned it. He’s worked hard and managed to gain a lot of respect in and amongst the team, as well as the staff. He played the other night with a bunch of starting players and held his own, and scored an assist. I think he and our other rookie this year are going to be contributors.

On Jean Alexandre: He’s a guy that we were happy to get and he’s done nothing to prove us wrong. We think he’s been fantastic this preseason. He’s a physical presence for us. There’s going to be a few attacking minded players in the center of the park who aren’t going to want to get too close to him. He can be physically intimidating and he’s a pretty smart player. He’s got some areas that he needs to improve on: tactically defensive, and some decisions on the ball, and speed of play that all young players can have trouble with. But he seems to be a guy who is very humble, and wants to learn and wants to do extra all the time. I’m pleased with him and think he’ll be a guy that we can plug in there and move right along. Long-term I think he’s a fantastic prospect for us.

On Ned Grabavoy: He’s a guy that’s very experienced in the league. He’s played a lot of first team football in MLS. He’s been a guy that I’ve always had some admiration for. He’s very gifted technically with both his right foot and his left foot. He’s another type of midfielder that can play both inside and out and do a lot of nice things for us. He’s a guy that’s extremely competitive in the training sessions. I think he fits into exactly with the way we’ve built this team. He’s another guy that’s going to compete for a position and make things very difficult all the time and make things very difficult for the coaching staff.

On upgrading crossing ability into the box on a wide pitch: That’s a very interesting comment, because that’s one way to play. If we don’t play with that way – if we aren’t a team that gets down to the byline and serves balls into the box will we not be successful? It’s one way to play. We don’t play with wing midfielders. I hope everybody by now knows that. Maybe there are some people that don’t believe that. But I think if you know what you are watching long enough you are going to realize that we don’t play with wing midfielders. We rely on our backs to get forward and that’s a very difficult prospect for them – that’s a lot of running that they have to do. But I think when they get into those positions we have to focus on how many more times we can get them the ball in those positions so that they can serve. But I don’t think that we necessarily change the way that we play just because we don’t serve the ball into the box a lot.

On the wingback role with this team: I think that we looked back on last year and realized that when they did get forward, we didn’t get them the ball enough. Our central type of players were more inclined to play the ball inside rather than outside. And that’s something that we have talked about on multiple occasions this preseason: to get those guys the ball. When they make those kinds of runs, we need to reward them for that. And I think we’ve got four fantastic players in those positions in Robbie Russell, Ian Joy, Chris Wingert and Tony Beltran. I think we’ve got to continue to reward them when they do get forward and in turn they’ve got to focus on the quality of their service when they do get the chances.

On the central defense and holding midfielders roles: In order to play that way you’ve got to have some real strong central figures - some real strong holding players. I think it’s just the athleticism in a player like Olave and David Horst that allows us to play that way more. Because I don’t feel like those two players in particular are ever going to get beat for pace.

Carolina Challenge Cup Championship Goes to Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake defeated Toronto FC 2-1 in tonight’s Carolina Challenge Cup final to take home the hardware. The team scored twice early off of goals by Yura Movsisyan and Clint Mathis while creating numerous opportunities during the first 20 minutes. Movsisyan and Findley seemed to combine particularly well during that stretch.

A few minutes after the 2nd goal was scored, TFC defender Kevin Harmse was sent off with his second yellow card. However, the Reds seemed to play better after his departure as they stifled RSL’s chances and created some of their own. Coach Kreis commented that he felt that RSL was too confident after the send-off. Regardless, TFC managed a goal of their own off with a DeRosario re-direct off of a free kick, and appeared to have equalized off of another late in the match but it was waived off for offside.
