Reports now coming out of Costa Rica that Jean Carlos Solorzano not coming on trial was a decision "taken by the player" and that he is "very happy here and I prefer to concentrate on this and better not to travel, I'm young and I know I will have other opportunities."
Methinks someone in Costa Rica is blowing smoke. Either it's several news agencies who had previously interviewed the player and team representatives, or it's this latest report which just might have been made out of an effort to save face. Solorzano Contract Negotiation
Apparantly Jeancarlo Solorzano's trial with RSL being held up has nothing to do with RSL, but stems from an ongoing negotiation between the player and his club, Alajuelense. At issue is a potential 1-yr contract extension. This comes courtesy of Ovacion.
San Jose .- The journey of a striker Jean Carlos Solorzano try the Real Salt Lake of MLS is stranded for lack of an agreement between the player and Alajuelense Liga Deportiva.
Table UNDAFs asked to extend his contract for another year, but the player does not want on the terms that the club offered him, according to President Jorge Hidalgo hedgehog.
When consulted by Day this afternoon, Jean Carlos said they were negotiating.
I received a similar response on the topic from Jose Alberto Montenegro at Monumental Radio:
Solórzano didn’t travel yesterday because again the club are disagree with
the agent of the player and with the player. Alajuelense want that Solórzano
sign one year more after the travel, but Solórzano is disagree with the offer.

Thoughts on Jean Carlos "Nico" Solorzano
Here are a few thoughts on Jean Carlos Solorzano from Alajuelense fans. The Costa Rican striker is reportedly scheduled to join Real Salt Lake for a trial in Florida beginning February 18th.

”Answering your questions, can tell you that Jean Carlo is a very fast player. In his first games he was way too fast and without good control of the ball, but in the last two short tournaments he has improved this a lot, having a way better handling of the ball and keeping his speed. He fights for every ball, runs a lot, very good stamina, those are his characteristics. What type of striker he is?, I would say a mix of opportunist with fast penetration towards the goal, and good shot. This will be his first international experience so if he can manage that, you will have an excellente striker that we will sure miss a lot. Hope you can welcome him very well.”

“He is extremely quick and persistent. His pace is outstanding. He has scored a couple of header goals, but he mostly dribbles defenders to score. Personally I would compare his pace to Adebayor's and his style of scoring to Luis Fabiano's ( I guess...). He is a well rounded player and I'm sure that if he ends up staying in Utah the fans (there) will be very pleased.

"Solorzano is a good player, but he still needs to be polished. He is really fast and has a lot of heart. You can expect him to give it his all and a little more every game.
His shooting technique is good, heading technique is decent and dribbling skills are OK. If he could find a way to control his dribbling with his speed, he could become extremely dangerous.
He is at his best on the open field, taking the ball from just a little after midfield, instead of receiving it with his back to the goal. His quickness helps him to always be near any dangerous crosses his teammates may produce. I do believe he can perform better as a second forward and not as a pure striker.
At the moment, he is a good player with very interesting qualities. After all, he has been a starter on all youth national teams. If he can develop those qualities even further, it should make for an excellent forward."

El Khalifi & Solorzano Tidbits
There is not yet any official word on the news of the signing of Rachid El-Khalifi, the winger from the Dutch team SC Cambuur who reportedly impressed over the last couple of weeks in preseason training in Ventura, California. There is also no official confirmation of the impending arrival of Jean Carlos Solorzano as a trialist in Florida in a few days from his Costa Rican side LD Alajuelense. I will pass along word as soon as I receive confirmation of these.
However, here is the result of some of my research on the two:
El Khalifi
My Google-Dutch reading has me a little puzzled. Some reports indicate that he is coming back to Salt Lake this week. The direct quotes from El Khalifi were, "It went very well. The people at the club were also satisfied. There is already a two-year contract ready for me. This week I hope to hear the final go ahead". There seems to be some reference in this statement and in other reports to waiting for approval. Most likely this is just a formality and the contract will go off without a hitch. However, there is another option.
El Khalifi is currently under contract through June. Before he came on trial with Real Salt Lake he did so with the blessing of his club. I assumed that either the club would let him go on a free or that Real Salt Lake would need to wait until the summer to acquire his services. Could this be an issue that is still being sorted out?

My Google-Spanish isn't much better than my Google-Dutch, but I did discover that Solorzano's current team, LD Alajuelense, is looking for a short loan of 1 year in order to give the player some additional experience. The preference of Major League Soccer is to sign players on two-year deals with a loan buyout agreement. While we rarely learn of the terms of these agreements, if Real Salt Lake were to sign the player it will be interesting to see if it's only a 1 year deal.
