Magical Night at Rio Tinto

I won't bore you with a typical match report. If you're interested in details of the match, here's my recap on Goal.com. Here are some of my thoughts on the match:

  • Mathis' goal was top-notch. I'm sure it will be goal of the week, but could be goal of the year material as well.
  • Speaking of Mathis, in my book he's been by far our best player at this point in the season. Nobody else has performed as consistently well as he has this year.
  • 6 goals in a half has only been done 3 times in the history of the league, but this is the first time that all 6 goals game from different players.
  • The last 6-goal half also involved RSL. It was their drubbing at the hands of NY in 2006.
  • Real Salt Lake had never scored more than 4 goals in a match.
  • The 29 shots by RSL shattered their previous best of 24 shots. Most in the league at this point in 2009.
  • RSL has scored 12 goals in 3 home matches, and 0 goals in 2 road matches.
  • RSL has given up 2 goals in 3 home matches, and 4 goals in 2 road matches.
  • Will Yura's goal take the pressure off and allow him to score more goals?
While this match was extremely satisfying, it's important to keep in mind that New England was missing 3 of their best players including 3 starting defenders. Next Saturday will be a great test for the team, as Colorado is an intense rival and has played well early in the season. A victory there would be a definite accomplishment.
